Perfect Quiz Questions

- Writing and researching the perfect quiz questions is not as difficult as you may think

Trivia quizzes are fun and educational events where participants form teams and try to solve various general knowledge challenges in order to compete with other teams. Anyone can take part and a varied knowledge spectrum is recommended across a team in order to cover all aspects of the questions fired at them.

The fun really starts when the questions are not that simple, when they are pitched in such a way that the participants have to work with one another in order to eventually solve them. The questions must be fun and entertaining too, keeping the quiz participants enthralled and interested from start to finish.

This is not an easy feat to achieve, as any experienced Quizmaster will tell you. So often can one pitch the questions at too high a level that the players lose confidence and interest, it's no fun when you really cannot guess or work out the answer. Also, setting the questions too easy will also have a negative effect - every team has perfect scores and all teams win, really no fun and no point in playing overall.

In my experience, researching questions may be time consuming but worthwhile at the end of the competition. Hearing the players laugh whilst a question is read out is also a nice bonus, giving a buzz to the Quizmaster as he hears the reaction from his entertaining question.

Experienced Quizmasters get their sources of questions from a variety of locations, be it from the radio, television, newspaper, internet, books or whatever, you are surrounded by resources and need to learn just how to reconize that fact and utilize them.

One great example is Wikipedia. Everyone knows Wikipedia, some love it, some loath it for it's inaccuracies. On the front page of Wikipedia you will always find events summarized from history, events that happened on that day. Enter a day of the year in the search bar and you will find more. These lists are invaluable, a source for great questions, facts and a story behind each. Wikipedia also have an excellent Random Page feature if your chain of thought grinds to a halt.

Great quiz questions that have really stumped our quiz participants include "Since June 1986, what has travelled in a clockwise direction at 12 metres per second?". Solving this puzzle involves some knowledge of history as well as clever thinking. For example, many events took place in June 1986 but ask any soccer fan what happened and they will instantly tell you that the World Cup took place in Mexico. Many outstanding events took place during this time but since the question included the word 'since', then it is implied that the event is still going on. What could that event be? Certainly it could not be a goal or a result, no player from that era would still be playing now so it must be somthing else. No man can run much faster than 10 metres per second so it must be either non-human or an overall sepctacle.

Ever heard of La Ola? The Mexican wave? Sure you have, it's where the spectators stand up and raise their hands in the air as their neighbor starts to do the same. The overall speed measured around the stadium is on averag 12 metres per second, so their is your answer, the Mexican wave.

That in my opinion is a great question, it gets participants talking, debating or even shouting "Awwwwww" as the answer is read out if they did no manage to solve it.

Questions like these are hard to write and research, but given the chain of thought, starting at Wikipedia's home page, choosing a date and reading a resulting article will really generate these questions at an astonishing rate. The more questions you write, the easier it becomes and the more impressive the questions will be too.
